Since I’ve become really serious about running again, I had to catch up with times and see what was available to runners to help with their recovery and performances.
I had not really know that there were products out there that would assist with your performance, especially endurance running, and other products out there that would assist in making your recovery time shorter and more efficient.
Thanks to the great people @GUEnergyLabs (www.guenergy.com) I now am well aware of products available to the running community to assist with all aspects of running performance and recovery.
Over the past few weeks, I had been in contact with GU Energy about what their products can do for me and my running and recovery. They said instead of hearing it from them, why not give it a try for myself, and a few days later, I had a nice sampling of products to try. I had at my fingertips, GU’s Roctane Gel in the Island Nectar flavor, the GU Recovery Brew in the Strawberry Watermelon flavor, and a tube of their GU Electrolyte Tablets in the Pink Grapefruit flavor.
Since my use of gels has been very limited, prior to this past week, I’ve only used gels a few times, I really didn’t know exactly what to expect from the gels. What I found out was very pleasing. I tested the Roctane Gel on a 5K tempo run. About 10 minutes prior to going out, I popped open a Roctane, and was able to ingest the gel in one swipe of the packet. The gel was a very thick yet edible consistency and washed down with a small swig of water. I immediately found my self ready to go once it was in my system. This was probably due to the 2x caffeine in the Roctane. Once my run started, I could feel my energy level increase as the run went on. There were moments that I would get a feeling of tiredness, but a wave of energy would jolt thru my body pushing me to keep going.
After my run, I was impressed w/ the product, and wanted to see what else was available, so I hit up a local running specialty store, and picked up a Roctane Vanilla Orange and a GU Mint Chocolate Gel for my Sunday long run. I didn’t get to the Roctane; however, the Mint Chocolate was delicious and useful all at the same time. It tasted just like Mint Chocolate Ice Cream in a candy bar version that you could eat all in one bite. The effects of this on my run was I didn’t want to just go out on a full out sprint, but was able to control and sustain my pace for a good while.
After my long run on Sunday, it was time to see what the recovery brew was all about. I have really only used chocolate milk as a recovery drink, so trying a powder was a nice change. What I got was much more than I bargined for. In a water bottle, I emptied and mixed the contents, and I could immediately smell the strawberry/watermelon mix. It was very pleasant and made me want to start drinking it. Once it hit my lips, it was a very refreshing and welcome taste after a long, hard run. At times, chocolate milk can feel heavy in your stomach after a long run. This was not like that at all. You don’t immediately feel the effects of the drink, but I can say that when I woke up this morning, the usual sore or tight feelings I have after a long run did not appear. I did feel fresher than usual a day after a long run.
The final test was the Electrolyte tablets. I filled a water bottle up, dropped a tab in, and it immediately started to fizz and mix in the water all by itself. They say you can use this to drink while working out to add a little flavor to your water, and I believe you could do that. What I found out took me back to the days of my youth with the Pink Grapefruit flavor. For those that might remember the Goody brand of pop, they did have a Pink Grapefruit flavor, and every time I went over to my grandparents house, I would drink these like water. This had that exact same taste, so the memories just started to flood back of my youth. I also felt it refreshed my body as I was just sitting at home playing with my youngest son. It was a light, refreshing drink, and I found myself longing to drop another tablet into a bottle of water.
All in all, I was very impressed with the GU Product line, and highly recommend any of their products to any runner at any level. The only negative I had was the aftertaste I got from the Roctane Island Nectar; however, there are several flavor options available to choose from. For those not familiar with gels, try out GU. You won’t be disappointed.
I plan on making GU my gel of choice in my training regiment, and plan on the continual use of their recovery brew and tablets.
I want to again thank GU for their support!!!
